As my first week here at Croton Point Park (CPP) comes to an end, I'm struck by the fact that it's taken that long for me to find the time to sit and reflect. The title of today's blog sums up the highlights. Visits to Fishkill to visit my mother, a doctor's appointment, and a couple of trips back to my apartment to get forgotten items was surpassed by the weather, the amount of pollen in the air...and on our vehicles, and, tragically, a drowning right off the point...Tellers Point...here at the campground.
Three fellas from Brooklyn rented a cabin down the road and were to spend the Memorial Day weekend fishing. One 47 year old waded out onto a sandbar and not being familiar with the treacherous currents of the Hudson or that the depth varied from four feet to forty feet. Anyway, about 10:45 am, in came the parade of first responders. Fire apparatus, County, local police as well as volunteers poured in to the scene, more than twenty vehicles in all. After three days of searching, a recreational boater spotted the body thus ending the search. Read about it here.
With temperatures pushing 90°, my site 37 was the place to be. Situated on the west side of the roadway, the sun was quickly shaded thanks to the large sycamore and pine trees grove in which Winnie is nestled. According to one county worker at the campground the visible yellow haze that we observe coincides with the annual Clearwater event usually held on a weekend in June. This year they've canceled the event due to the work being done to overhaul the famed river sloop. Vehicles, tables, and most anything situated outside has taken on the yellow hue of pollen. In addition, cottonwood trees have dispersed their seeds and certain parts of Croton village have taken on a "winter wonderland" landscape as breezes cause the air-borne seeds to swirl in eddies along the curb.
So far, friends and new friends have once again made the "camping" experience comfortable and fun. Ray & Kathy are set up next door. Danny & Jimmy (Tappan Zee Bridge workers) are still here from Connecticut. Trish & Craig continue to occupy their site from last year and now living in Florida. New neighbors and long term campers at CPP are Nancy and Warren from Kansas. Warren is working on the pipeline currently being constructed in our neck of the woods. (presently in Stony Point). My favorite part when meeting these folks is to hear about their work. The 42" gas pipeline will terminate in Boston, MA. As I listen I find it all engrossing, amazing, and dangerous. They'll be here until November. Soon to arrive will be Vicki & George. Their travels have taken them or will soon take them all over the country. Follow her blog by clicking here.

ReplyDeleteWow the "snow" from the Cottonwood, aka Poplar Trees, seems to be heavier than usual. Watching your video clip allowed me to hear what I've been missing so much at every other campground so far - the birds.
ReplyDeleteSo sad about that drowning. That cabin area really should have a warning sign about the dangerous river currents, especially around Teller's Point.
Enjoy the rest of your time there. I hope the weather continues to cooperate.
We will catch up soon.
